Tested Positive for Covid-19 (Part 1)

On 8 November 2020, after nearly two weeks of fever, I underwent my third blood test at KPJ Damansara Specialist. The doctor advised immediate admission for further medical examinations, which required a mandatory swab test for Covid-19 as part of the hospital SOP. Once the test was completed, I was immediately quarantined.

At around 2am, my results came back positive, and I was transferred to Sungai Buloh Hospital. As the ambulance sped through the quiet night, the passing scenes – mostly darkness interrupted by the occasional flash of headlights – amplified my sense of uncertainty. Upon arrival, I was ushered into an elevator, led through silent corridors, and eventually placed in a four-bedded ward where the other patients were fast asleep. In the stillness of the night, a series of medical procedures followed: blood tests, a chest X-ray, an ECG, and checks on my blood pressure and oxygen levels.

By then, it was almost time for the Muslim patients to wake up for their morning prayers, followed by the nurses beginning their morning routine. I couldn’t sleep – unsettled by the unfamiliar surroundings and still trying to process everything that had unfolded so suddenly. Unlike some who had time to pack their belongings and share a final moment with their loved ones before the ambulance arrived, I had been “physically” alone – quarantined in a suite at KPJ Damansara Specialist – until my transfer to the government hospital. Yet, I was never truly alone, for Christ was with me and always is. Even so, the abrupt turn of events left me shaken and unprepared.

I have never considered myself particularly brave or independent, but that was okay, because 2 Corinthians 12:9 reminds me that God’s grace is sufficient for me, for His power is made perfect in weakness. Clinging to this truth, I prayed for strength and boldness to face the battle ahead. Everything seemed to be working in my favour when I was told I could be discharged the following day. Joy filled my heart, and with thanksgiving, I eagerly looked forward to returning to the comfort of home. But that joy was short-lived. The night before my scheduled discharge, my oxygen levels dropped, and my lungs became infected.

While the medical staff busied themselves with repeated tests, including another swab test, time seemed to stand still for me. They inserted an intravenous (IV) infusion for liquid medication and fitted me with oxygen nasal cannula to deliver supplemental oxygen. Though I remained outwardly composed, my mind was actually in turmoil, and my emotions were unsettled. Once again, the path ahead was unclear and uncertain. Not knowing what to expect next, the only comfort was the unwavering assurance that Jesus was with me.
