Orion Youth Fellowship

(Reposting an old write-up from my previous blog)

The following article on Orion Youth Fellowship was written for Sungai Way Subang Methodist Church (SSMC) Newsletter, Ebenezer 2011 edition. It reflects my journey with the non-Muslim teens from Budimas Orion Home. My involvement began when the Administrator approached me to provide English tuition to the primary school children. This initial step gradually expanded into the Youth Fellowship. Concurrently, I was also actively engaged in community service, volunteering as an English teacher at SSMC tuition centre.

The youth came from broken families and some faced learning difficulties, yet despite their circumstances, their determination and effort is a testament to God’s grace at work in their lives. It was truly inspiring to see how the Lord works through the challenges of reaching out to the youth from difficult backgrounds. I was amazed at their eagerness to learn… they took pride and much effort in memorizing the scriptures.

I’m grateful to the Lord for not only His guidance but also provision for the study materials… an answer to my prayer. Truly if God has called us to a task, He will ensure that we have the grace and tools to carry it through. While our efforts may not be perfect, we do our best faithfully, leaving the results in His hands. Thanks be to God, and all glory be to His name!

Psalm 119:105 (ESV) – “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.”

“The pin-drop silence in the Agape room was suddenly broken by running steps and bustling noises and within a few seconds, the youth came bursting excitedly into the room…” That is the usual greeting which I got accustomed to. Praise the Lord for such enthusiasm!

I would like to take this opportunity to extend my heartfelt thanks to the pastors and those involved in making this fellowship possible for the non-Muslim teens from Budimas Orion Home. The primary objective of this group is to teach the biblical doctrines of Christ and salvation, specially catered to meet those who have a weak command of the English language.

The Youth Fellowship was conducted for 6 months from March to September 2011. Weekly lessons were held on Tuesdays from 8.00pm to 9.30pm. Learning materials were taken from “The Mailbox Club” courses which are Christ-centered. Besides that, Christian movies were shown occasionally to reinforce Christian values and morals. Under the tutelage of the Holy Spirit, there was much progress with lots of fun and laughter. The youth were also encouraged to share testimonies, memorize bible verses and lead prayers. During this period of learning, all the youth also received Jesus into their hearts.

It is truly encouraging to see how the Lord impact lives. Even though the class had to end because the Home was relocating out of town, I commit the sown seeds onto the Lord and trust that they will yield good fruits in His timing. Last but not least, a note of appreciation to the Maintenance worker (his name has been removed to protect private and confidential information) for his dedication and faithfulness in getting the room ready each week for the class. I’m thankful to God for the privilege to be part of His plan for the underprivileged youth.
