Ephesians 6:14 – Stand therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth…
The first weapon is the belt which is the girdle of truth because it’s essential for victory in the life of a believer. If you and I do not know the truth about Jesus Christ or the Holy Spirit, and if we don’t know the truth about our position in Christ Jesus, sealed by the Holy Spirit unto the day of redemption, our assurance and our standing with Him, then when Satan attacks us, the first thing that we’re going to do is to be fearful. Thus, we are already headed for major defeat. We need to know the truth, to walk in the truth and to live by the truth and let truth be the characteristic of our life.
The first element of the armour mentioned by Paul is the Belt of Truth. This is understandable since Satan is said to be the “father of lies” (John 8:44). Deception is high on the list of things God considers to be an abomination. A “lying tongue” is one of the things He describes as “detestable to Him” (Proverbs 6:16-17). We are therefore urged to put on the Belt of Truth, meaning to put our trust in God’s truth and in what He says. It is also for our own sanctification and deliverance, as well as for the benefit of those to whom we witness.
The belt, known as balteus, played a crucial role in the effectiveness of a Roman soldier’s armour. It was the belt that held the scabbard, without which there would be no place to put a sword. And truth represents the Word of God. Symbolically, to wear the Belt of Truth means that we have to be rooted in God’s Word. Truth grounds us, reminds us of our identity in Christ and prevents us from falling prey to the devil’s lies.
Our scope of knowledge is very limited. If all we see is what we see, we really don’t see all there is to be seen since it is a spiritual and invisible battle. So, when we start operating on God’s view of the matter truthfully, we will begin to see the supernatural enter into the circumstances of our conflicts and our battles. Truth is the absolute standard by which reality is measured. The Bible says the Spirit of God is the Spirit of Truth (John 14:17). Jesus said in John 14:6: “I am the way, the truth and the life.” God only functions in a realm of truth.
How to apply the Belt of Truth?
Start our day in the Word – Jesus said in John 8:32 that only the truth can set us free. How we start our day is vital to winning the daily battles that we will inevitably face. Begin our day in the Word. It is important that we are able to immerse ourselves in scripture without distraction.
End our day in the Word – In a quiet place before we lay down, dedicate some time to studying the Word or to reflect on the morning scriptures. We can also have a short account with God on the affairs of the day before going to bed.
Memorize scriptures – It will enable us to have quicker access when needed. Apply God’s Word in our lives and speak it aloud in a spiritual battle. Use the Word of Truth as a template to guide our prayers.
A life of integrity – We are to be truthful in the things that we say and live. We are to agree with the truth not only by accepting the Word of God but also by living according to it. We open the door to deceit for the “father of lies” when we set out deliberately to be deceptive.
